Sheila Arnold is the CEO and lead performer of History’s Alive! and was the Coordinator for Colonial Williamsburg’s Teachers’ Institute for 6 years. She has helped thousands of teachers professionally develop through her storytelling programs and historic character presentations. Her stories are truly inspiring. This year marks the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and Sheila will explore the idea of freedom through the character Betsy Costner. Betsy Costner is a slave who was born in North Carolina, but during the “second migration” is moved without her family to Mississippi. Betsy talks from a post-Civil War view about the Civil War itself and the destruction to where she was living, her search for her son, her desire to go North and this “new thing called freedom.” After her historical presentation Sheila will provide her insights on how to make history come alive in the classroom.
