Keynote Speaker NYS Regent, 5th Judicial District "The New York State Board of Regents - Toward An Opportunity to Learn" We are eager to welcome and introduce our new Regent, Elizabeth Hakanson, to the CNYCSS community. Regent Hakanson was herself a long-time educator in the Syracuse City School District, including social studies. The Board of Regents is an important and often misunderstood civic institution. In her remarks, Regent Hakanson will discuss the relationship the Board of Regents seeks with educators on behalf of students in our state. She will outline her goals for the Regents and will converse with us about our hopes for continued growth in social studies education in New York State. | Lunch Keynote Donna Merlau NYSED Office of State Assessment "An SED Update on Assessment - Where Are We in the Process"? We are thrilled to welcome veteran educator from our own CNYCSS council, Donna Merlau. For the last 12 years, Donna has served as an associate in Instructional Services for Social Studies and is leading the development and implementation of the new assessments, based also on the new Framework and Toolkit. Teachers and administrators, K-12, play an integral role in students’ readiness and success with the new high school exams. Donna will update us on the current design, the schedule for implementation, and what schools need to be doing now to prepare for significant changes. |
This year we encourage all participants to consider how presentations inform our understanding of the NYS K-12 Framework, both in terms of content and in terms of the Social Studies practices. Our engagement as professionals sets a powerful example for our students. Our ability to transfer our learning here to teaching in K-12 classrooms has real value to our students’ success.
