Dr. Keith Bybee, "Fake News: What Kind of Problem Is It?" from 5 to 6 p.m.

PUTIN, THE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH, AND NUCLEAR WEAPONS:

The Impact of a Belief System on Today’s World

Dr. John Langdon, 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The collapse of Communism in 1991 deprived Soviet citizens of their identities as Soviets and of their belief system.  The Russian Republic gave them new identities, and the Russian Orthodox Church gave them an ancient belief system that quickly adapted itself to the modern world.  The explicit alliance between President Vladimir Putin, the Russian Orthodox Church, and the Russian Nuclear Weapons forces and industry raises disturbing issues for Russia’s neighbors and rivals.  Those who believe that religion is a private matter that should not trespass on the public sphere should ponder what is going on in Russia today.
