in the Digital Age
1-Day Law and Civic Education Professional Development Opportunity
Syracuse University, College of Law On Tuesday,
July 10th, 2018, 9 am – 4 pm
Open to all New York in-service and pre-service teachers grades K-12
Fee: $30 per registrant
The Law, Youth and Citizenship Program of the New York State Bar Association is offering the opportunity to experience outstanding professional development with expert presenters. Learn strategies and obtain new resources (materials provided) to develop your professional skills especially in the areas of “News Literacy” and “Civic Responsibility” to enmpower students as active, informed , engaged, and responsible participants in our democracy.
This training will empower classroom teachers to develop essential skills in their students featured in the C3 Framework for College, Career and Civic Life.
You will walk away with the understanding of how to:
Help students understand core civic values and their rights and responsibilities as citizens, especially as consumers and publishers of information and the news in a digital world.
Help students identify what information is news and what is credible
Effectively teach students to identify fairness and bias
Help students understand what information is “actionable”
Improve student civic engagement
Build capacity for effective / responsible student voice
Special focus on the challenges of News Literacy & Civic Responsibility on the Internet
Developed in partnership with the Center for News Literacy in the School of Journalism at Stony Brook University, this training will allow for guided exploration of the News Literacy Curriculum as well as opportunities for each participant to work with content and instructional experts to tailor turn-key resources and strategies to meet their own students’ instructional needs and learning outcomes. All participants will receive a CTLE Certificate certifying up to 7 hours of professional development.
